ECHOES OF IDENTITY

Dates:

1 October – 1 February 2025

Location:

2 Av. Princesse Grâce, 98000 Monaco

Espinasse31 Contemporary Art Gallery returns to Monte Carlo with "Echoes of Identity," a dual female street aritst: Jenny Perez USA (b. 1984) and Alejandra De La Torre SPAIN (b. 1983). The exhibition will be held at the Meridien Beach Plaza - 22 Av. Princesse Grâce, 98000 Monaco, from October 1, 2024, until February 1, 2025.

The title "Echoes of Identity" reflects the underlying theme that binds both artists' works: a deep exploration of identity through personal and cultural narratives. Though their approaches and mediums differ, both Jenny Perez and Alejandra De La Torre engage in a dialogue about how memory, heritage, and self-perception shape artistic expression. Perez’s vibrant, abstract compositions pay homage to her Caribbean roots and the Miami urban landscape, while De La Torre’s introspective installations examine the intimate connections we form with objects and the stories they tell about our lives. Together, their works offer a multifaceted reflection on the fluidity of identity, inviting viewers to navigate the spaces between the personal and the universal.

Jenny Perez, a Caribbean-American artist, draws from the Miami golden era of street art she witnessed in the early 2000s. Her paintings reflect the energy of the streets while exploring formal abstraction. A constant explorer of new ideas and forms, her recent body of work reveals the tension between her past and her future, presented through vivid colors, dynamic biomorphic shapes, and intricate brushstrokes.

Perez is known for her innovative use of custom-made sculptural canvases, which she designed to evoke the aristocratic portraiture of the Victorian era. Yet, her work is also a celebration of her own heritage, paying homage to women of color and placing them within an abstract, universal context that transcends both time and place. Perez’s distinctive approach not only reworks classical forms but also brings forward a modern dialogue on identity, femininity, and transformation. Jenny's Perez work have been recently presented in well known art fairs such as Basel Art Miami and Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary with Espinasse31 Contempoary Art Gallery.

Alejandra De La Torre, born in Castellón, Spain, has cultivated an impressive artistic career after earning her Master’s in Artistic Production from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. With a multidisciplinary approach that spans from street art to pictorial installations, De La Torre focuses on our relationship with objects and how these connections embody memory, attachment, and human experiences.

Her recent works delve into themes of possession and accumulation, often using objects as symbols of societal concerns like gender inequality and labor precarity. While objects play a prominent role in her visual language, they serve as a narrative tool, helping her explore deeper, existential topics. De La Torre’s work has been exhibited internationally, with recent highlights including her solo show, "La Belleza de la Acumulación" at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Villafamés (2021) and her participation in notable art fairs like Art Verona and Basel Art Miami with Espinasse31 Contempoary Art Gallery.
