ESPINASSE31 Project Mission
Espinasse31 residency aims to:
Promote Urban and Street Art as well as related cultural practices, by hosting some of the most influential and prolific artists to stay for short periods of time - about a month - during which they will participate in workshops, meetings and they will conceive a series of works. Each residency project will end with a events and group exhibitions.
Offer guest artists a platform to showcase their art work and create artistic and social opportunities that could continue after the time scheduled at the residence.
Create a community based around Epinasse31 through intercultural dialogue, encouraging collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas among the local community and the artists in residency.
Explore, produce and stimulate the aesthetic and critical thinking, the social intervention in art, and inspire the local community, the artists and visitors to be aware of the different forms of art, endorsing them as fundamental elements of a cultural self-consciousness.
Espinasse31 Milano Artist’s Residency aims to bring to Milan pop and street artists from all over the world.
Used to leave their trademark traveling worldwide, street artists are widely considered to be the XXI century’s “globe trotters”.
Their international experience, mixed with the sophisticated techniques of their “academic” peers, resulted in a new wave of contemporary art, characterized by a strong form of individualism.
The artists are hosted in the inspiring spaces of a former print factory for 3/4 week-long periods, during which they can work either alone or collaborate with other artists. As a matter of fact, Espinasse31 encourages the exchange of ideas, techniques and artistic languages, in order to bring to life groundbreaking and previously unseen works. Espinasse31’s street artists are now strictly selected by their ability to transpose their murals into fascinating indoor works, and by their curriculum.
ESPINASSE31 Contemporary Muralism
Over the past decade, Street Art has become very popular thanks to some of the greatest exponents of this form of art, such as Keith Haring, Banksy or Shepard Fairey. After a first phase, during which it was impregnated of political references and widely seen as a social provocation, in the last few years urban art has experienced a massive evolution. Many exponents of this form of art have softened their aggressive approach, in order to encourage the masses to get involved in their art, rather than provoking them with it.
This change of direction is due to the strong empathy shown by the art audience towards the street artists, who have turned from being seen as “young rebels” to respected artists. Thanks to the involvement of the public through social media, street artists have been able to build a large fans and investors base. The collector's market is composed by many different categories, from small enthusiasts to large collectors able to invest a considerable amount of money into big projects.
The Street Art market is distinguished by the traditional art market of the so called “establishment” because of its variety of public. This is possible through the circulation of multiples, editions and works at more affordable prices. With that said, originals and limited editions have seen a steady rise in prices in the last decade, making street art one of the most interesting art forms to invest in.
Street Art and Emerging Contemporary Artists are the main subjects Espinasse31 focuses on.
